Poverty is a widely rampant issue in India. There are an estimated 220.1 million people living below the poverty line out which close to 80 million comprise the urban poor. This was not always the case though. In the 1970s, only 60 million people were living below the poverty line in urban areas. The increase in recent years has arisen through an exodus of people from rural areas to cities in the hope of finding a better livelihood. Rural India is still largely dependent on agriculture which is very unpredictable and unreliable as a source of income. Hence, the migration to cities, resulting in the mushrooming of slums

In February 2009 we started our womens' wing....

In March 2009 we started our creche/playschool....

Slum dwellers have many problems ranging from unemployment to no support system for working mothers. The women suffer from issues like domestic violence and gender discrimination at home and since they have no steady income, they put up with it and suffer silently along with their children. The children are either pulled out of schools to earn a living for their destitute mothers or are left to wander on the streets by themselves while their mothers go to work, thus making them vulnerable to abuse
